STORYTELLING PROGRAM

The annual Storytelling program was established in 1994 and is held every January. This community service project promotes literacy and the oral tradition of reading to young children. It is carried out by a costumed character and an "Altrusa" reader who read to about 600 children at preschools, kindergarten and elementary schools in the Eastern Sierra region over a two-week period. It is always such a rewarding experience for the volunteers when they see all the excited youngsters gather to see the character come to life and listen to the stories. Altrusa purchases copies of the featured book and donates some to each classroom in participating schools.
