Altrusa participates in the “Reach Out and Read” program, which recycles donated books. Any child who comes to participating doctors and health clinics in Mammoth and Bishop, either as a patient or sibling, is welcome to take any of these books home to read and enjoy. The hope is that these books will give an introduction to reading to young children or encourage them to read more. The program aims to stress the importance of reading as part of early childhood development, especially to parents who may not be fully aware of it. In 2006, approximately 2,000 books were donated.
