  • Ajiri Tea, a Kenyan Black Tea, will be available for sale.  Each box is decorated with a Handmade Label and Tie.  Proceeds from the sale of this tea will help to provide educational assistance to orphans of Western Kenya, our International Literacy Project.

The proceeds for this event support our literacy efforts in Inyo and Mono Counties which have included: Cerro Coso Library, Bishop Middle School Library, the GED program at the Conservation Camp, Teacher Scholarship awards, Books and Barn Animals Jamboree, Story Telling, Readers Theater, and so much more. We hosted over 150 members of District Eleven right here in Bishop and in addition to the business of workshops and training we showed them a really good time!  Had a western bar-b-que with line dancing, a star-gazing outing in our foothills, mural walk/run and turned one of the buildings at the fairgrounds into a beautiful banquet room for the installation of new officers.

This community service project promotes literacy and the oral tradition of reading to young children. It is carried out by a costumed character and an “Altrusa” reader who read to about 600 children at preschools, kindergarten and elementary schools in the Eastern Sierra region over a two-week period. It is always such a rewarding experience for the volunteers when they see all the excited youngsters gather to see the character come to life and listen to the stories. Altrusa purchases copies of the featured book and donates some to each classroom in participating schools.

The event usually includes activities such as a petting zoo and puppet shows for storytelling. Bookmarks are given to all preschoolers and elementary students as part of a campaign to promote reading. Tickets are sold for games, crafts, and a there is a bake walk.
